Violence-free Edo 2024 Gubernatorial Election: Edo P4P partners NSCDC

Benin: As the Edo 2024 Governorship election drew near, the Partners for Peace (P4P) in the Niger Delta, Edo State chapter, has collaborated with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Edo state Command in ensuring peaceful and violence free election. 

Speaking during an advocacy visit by members of the Project Implementation Committee (PIC), of Edo P4P, to Edo  state Commandant of NSCDC, the State Treasurer- Pst. Maria Okoh applauded the state Commandant for the good works he's doing in the state and reiterated the achievements of Edo P4P to include varied interventions in the area of rape, kidnapping, gender based violence, land/boundary disputes, communal crisis management, individual and communal conflict resolution, etc. 

Pst. Maria Okoh said the advocacy visit was aimed at informing the NSCDC Commandant of the P4P present intervention ongoing in the state meant in sensitisating Edo people on the need to eschew violence and embrace peace before, during and after the election. 

"We sensitize the public on civic education, violence free election, social obligation, peacebuilding activities. We also engage in conflict arbitration and mitigation, crisis prevention and management", she said.

Responding, the State Commandant of the NSCDC, Edo State- Mr
 Agun Gbenga Joseph said it was a good thing to partner with the P4P, since they have the same goal of making the country peaceful. He said if there is no peace, election cannot hold. 

Mr. Agun reiterated that the NSCDC had many things in common with the P4P, especially in the area of peacebuilding which informed the establishment of crisis management department. 

The NSCDC boss sensitize the PIC members on the operations of the corps. According to him, "we have private guard licensing. Private guard obtain licence through the Ministry of Interior. We need to guide their operations, gather information for security agencies.

"We also carry out protection of critical national assets such as mast, refineries, oil pipelines, etc".

He informed the peacebuilding group about the NSCDC peace rally taking place in the state and said that will help in deepening the partnership.
