Okhi-Iza and the danger in daring the Chicks
By Prof. Matthew Izibili
Yesteryears, in most Esan families, there used to be gardens around the house; there also used to be a prepared space in the compound called Azorkhor, were birds are kept and cared for especially for consumption. These birds are of different brands both in colour, size, and even their usages. In the midst of them, there's one usually called Okhi-Iza, a special breed for special purpose(s).To describe Okhi-Iza, it has usually scattered feathers on its body with tiny but long legs. They are smallish, very strong, and sensitive. By it's nature, it is defensive of her young ones against hawk or any perceived enemy. It has special built and such enhances it's smartness while making provisions for the little ones. Though it appears smallish, it is near impossible for it to be caught or suffer external attacks.
It is for this reason that it is said by those who have encountered this fowl's unique nature that Aikpakomuizaa! This is interpreted to mean that you don't underestimate Okhi-Iza, thinking that you can catch it with ease. This statement has been corrupted to Akpakomiza by those who do not have this experience from the traditional Esan subsistence agricultural background.
Now, behold Senator Monday Okpebholo, also known as "Akpakomiza"/Aikpakomuiza. Besides, Okhi-Azi may appear small, unkempt, unlearned; yet, a professional in defensive skills and it's ability to meet the needs of her young ones. We need not underestimate Okhi- Iza, perhaps because of its appearance. Let's pray and hope that no hawk, (human, internal or external, spiritual, etc), that will dare the Esan "bred Okhi-Iza" for mischief, misfortune or mis-governance, even as one can say that in this "Okhi-Iza" that cannot be toyed with, has brought to fruition the Esan Agenda! Remember , Aikpakomuiza!!
Hmmm, here comes the Governor-elect, from Esanland. May your tenure bring outstanding development to Esanland in particular, and Edo State in general. Congratulations to Esan people.
From all of us @Zibilism.
