Lagos Achievers Lions Club advocates for Sports Development in addressing drug abuse

As part of efforts to address the menace of drug abuse in Obalenyde South west and Ijeh Dolphin, Lagos communities, Lagos Achievers Lions Club, in collaboration with it's youth arm, Lagos Achievers Leo Club and the community development associations of Obalende and Ijeh, Lagos Nigeria organized the youths in a friendly football match, on  Sunday 25th August 2024. This was in commeration of the World Youth day, 2024. 

Speaking at the event, the President Lion Imeobong Oluyemi while speaking on the rationale behind the football match, said Lagos Achievers Lions Club believed in the beauty and future of the youths. She said the football match provided not only an opportunity for the youths to come together but to also sensitise them about the evil of drug abuse. She called on government at all levels to invest in sports development as a means of tackling the menace of drug abuse. 

On his part, the guest speaker and Zonal Commander, Lagos Zone, of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agencyefforts (NDLEA), Mr Segun Oke applauded the club for organising the  awareness campaign as well as encouraging the community to shun the heinous habit of drug abuse.

"Drug abuse has terminated the dreams and aspirations of many youths, thereby making it impossible for them to explore their potentials", he said. 

Also speaking, the Lagos Commander of the Agency, Abubakar Wali urged the youths to desist from drug abuse for a brighter future. “Drugs can make you lose your focus and vision and you will not be able to achieve that which you intend to achieve positively”, Wali said .

On her part, a poet therapist, Maureen Aniakor stressed the role of the family in curbing drug abuse. She emphasized the need for parents to be attentive. In her words, "drugs are dream killers".

Anyawu noted, “community leaders and religious organizations need to start taking responsibility to address the issue of drug abuse”.

The event included an important sensitization session with parents and was led by Mr Peter Akinbode, Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics NDLEA. Participants expressed joy and urged the club not to relent in their efforts.
