Nigeria's Foremost Female Peace Actor bags Peace Award

Dr. Bridget Osakwe has been honoured with a Distinguished Achievers Award in appreciation of her contributions to Peace, growth and development of Uneme Nation and Humanity at large. This award was presented to her on occasion of the launch of N500M Uneme Education and Security Trust Fund on September 14th, 2024.

Chief Dr. Bridget Osakwe is the National Network Coordinator for the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) in Nigeria. Previously, she worked as the Program Manager for the Women In Peacebuilding program (WIPNET) in Nigeria, which was launched by  WANEP and provided a platform for women’s groups and associations to promote social justice and advocate for vulnerable sectors of the population in times of conflict.

Dr. Bridget Osakwe was born into the Usiobaifo family of the Okhafe clan in Uneme Nekhua, Edo State. She grew up as a girl-child and faced attendant challenges of being a girl but was optimistic in her chances in life, with the belief in the saying that "when life gives you lemon, make lemonade".

Dr. Bridget Osakwe is a Peace expert with a PhD in Peace, Conflict and Development from Enugu State University, Enugu, Nigeria, and a Master's Degree in Peace and Reconciliation studies from Coventry University in the UK. She has attended relevant trainings  to her work at both national and international levels.

As a Peace and Security practitioner with over 25 years of work experience, she has established for work purposes and valuable professional with government, donor community,  global, private and civil society levels. 

She got involved in social development work in 1999 and has since then acquired training and experience in peace and conflict transformation processes. Her specific areas of expertise include women’s rights, human rights, conflict resolution and peacebuilding, gender and disaster, women and arms control, as well as women’s political empowerment. 

She has facilitated and spoken in several national and international conferences, including the “Interfaith Peace Building Consultation: The Need for a Gender Perspective” conference, organised by the Women Peacemakers of the International Fellowship of Reconciliation (IFOR) in Nicosia, Cyprus; the “Women’s Leadership and Agency in Conflict and Post Conflict Settings” conference in Freetown, Sierra Leone; the “Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) Working Group Community Engagement Practitioners’ Workshop”, organised by the United States Institute of Peace in Washington DC; and “The Role of Women in Countering Violent Extremism” conference in Istanbul, Turkey.

A Fellow of the Society of Peace Studies and Practice, she sits on the Board of several Not-for-Profit organisations.

Dr. Bridget is also a Melvin Jones Fellow for Dedicated Humanitarian Services at the Lions Club International Foundation. 

Lion Bridget Osakwe holds a traditional chieftaincy title of Eka Emem Ufot Duke of Calabar, 2018, and Nwanyi bu ulo, Breme of Nsukka, Enugu state, 2021.

Her key areas of expertise include:  Human rights, Women’s rights, gender and disaster, women and arms control, women’s political empowerment, peace negotiations and mediation, youth and peace education, etc.
