By Isaac Eranga, Journalists for Peace Network

In a bid to ensuring adequate security coverage for businesses in Edo State, members of Business and Hoteliers Stakeholders Forum (BHSF) recently met with Edo State Commissioner of Police- CP Umoru P. Ozigi at the State Police Headquarters in Benin City.

Speaking, the President of BHSF and Chief Executive Officer of Canada World Conglomerate and Resort - Chief Bishop, Dr. Omogiade Edokpolo congratulated the CP on his assumption of office and thanked him for his effort so far made in preventing crimes in the State, especially the incessant gang killings and harmaside  that have ravaged Benin, the capital city of Edo State before his arrival as CP. He said since the arrival of the new CP, Edo people now sleep with their two eyes closed. He however called for more effort in protecting business owners and their businesses in the State especially when it comes to land grabbing and police harassment.

"Prior to your arrival Mr. CP, Edo witnessed monumental killings of individuals as a result of gangs clashes, burglaries, land grabbing, police harassment, and has greatly affected business operations in the State. Though you've done greatly in curtailing the situation, like Oliver Twist, we are asking for more.

"Edo is indeed the bastion of entertainment, relaxation and comfort, but with the incessant rate of criminality, people are now going to other cities, including Asaba, to seek comfort. Many businesses have relocated to other cities to pursue their ventures. The whip of criminality is telling much on the hoteliers who are now running on gross deficit because of lack of patronage as a result fear of being victimized. With your wealth of experience already seen since your assumption of office, we believe you can do more.

"We of the BHSF believe that security of lives and property cannot be left in the hands of the Police alone, we decided to come and seek area of collaboration. We've really suffered when it comes to land grabbing and Police harassment of our supposed clients", the Omo-Iza of Igarra Kingdom said.

On his part, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, a graduate of Business Administration from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria- CP Umoru Ozigi assured members of BHSF that the police will not relent in her effort in curbating crimes in the State. He said since his assumption of office, he has sent red alert to criminals to desist or quit the State. "The result as you said is already being seen.

"I want you to support the Police by reporting any act of criminality and anyone suspected to be promoting crimes in the state. We have abated the killings in Edo; whether it is cult related or not, killing is killing. Businesses will continue to thrive in the state. You can always call on me anytime, my phone lines are open", the energetic CP said.

Those in the BHSF entourage include: Chief Bishop Dr. Omogiade Edokpolo- President of BHSF, and the Omo-Iza of Igarra Kingdom; Mr. Uyi Iyekekpolor- Member Committee of BHSF; representative of OVIC Hotel and Assistant Membership Committee of BHSF- Osagie Oladokun; Secretary of BHSF- Dr. Osado Tabusite; and Comrade Inegbenehi Iziegbe Slyvester.
