2024 World Volunteers' Day: Ovia N/E Red Cross honour deserving humanitarians

As part of event in celebrating the 2024 world volunteers' day, the Ovia North East division of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Edo State branch has invested new Associate Patrons in a bid to promoting Red Cross activities in the division.
Among participants were pupils and students from Sacred Heart Nursery and Primary School- Eguosa; Ekibi Primary School- Ovbiogie; and Edohen Education Centre- Ovbiogie. Participants were trained on First Aid practicality.
Those invested include: an erstwhile Deputy Chairman of National Youth Council of Nigeria, Edo State Council - Amb. Comr. Alexander Best Edokpeawe and Mr. Anslem Onogholor.
Those honoured with the Humanitarian Service Award include Europe based Dako Imomoh and Edirin Jaboro. Also awarded are: Mrs Abieyuwa Ogbeide, and Mr. Mathias Ahunsi.
Speaking after the investiture, a one-time representative of the National Association of Nigeria Students, Ambrose Alli University- Amb. Comr. Alexander Best Edokpeawe said he will work with the Ovia North East division in establishing Red Cross units in all the schools of the local government area. He said he will also ensure that all the units have first aid kits. "With the application of first aid, many lives can be saved from untimely deaths", he said.
On his part, the Divisional Coordinator- Comr. Fagbo Joseph Izevbaye said modalities have been put in place to create awareness about Red Cross activities in Ovia North East.
"We are happy to see our children being trained by our volunteers. Our aim is to take the First Aid training to more schools", he said.
Also speaking, the Ovia North East Divisional Secretary, Comr. Effiong Godday Usen said the world Volunteers day was a day set aside to honour volunteers across the world.
"Members are volunteering in many activities without being paid. The volunteers' day is also to energise volunteers.
"Today also afforded us the opportunity to teach the pupils and students drawn from various schools in the LGA on the rudiments and practicality of First Aid", said Effiong Godday Usen.
Earlier, Trainer Agho Lucky Uhunoma took the participants on a seminar on First Aid. He said the goal of First Aid was to save lives. According to him, "a First Aider is an individual that has undergone a training in First Aid and given a certificate to show he/she has been trained by recognised body like the Red Cross.
"A First Aider must be resourceful, have empathy, decisive, courageous, etc", he said.
There was a demonstration on practical ways of resuscitating a fainted person.
