Threat of violence in Edo State: Edo Progressive Indigenous Association give warning notice

The Edo Progressive Indigenous Association (EPIA), also known as Edo  Indigenous Movement, has given a warning notice to all those threatening violence and violence perpetrators in Edo State, saying Edo indigenous people will no longer accommodate their violent and criminal acts.

This was contained in a press statement signed by EPIA's Security Committee.

The statement posited that for decades, the people of Edo State have lived peacefully alongside their Hausa neighbours, engaging in mutually beneficial cultural and economic exchanges. He however said, the recent escalation of violence perpetrated by Fulani herdsmen in Edo communities has reached an intolerable level.

According to the statement, "In the past three months alone, our communities have suffered unprovoked attacks, including: brutal killings of innocent farmers and children, sexual violence against women and children, destruction of farmlands and food supplies, burning of homes and property, kidnappings and extortion, etc.

"These atrocities were met with deafening silence from the Nigeria authorities at all levels. Now, following unfortunate community response to these attacks, we face threats of retaliation from Northern states.

"Let it be clearly understood: While we remain committed to peaceful coexistence with all law-abiding citizens regardless of ethnicity or religion, the people of Edo State will not hesitate to defend our communities with equal measure against any aggression. Our tolerance has limits.

"We hereby call upon the Federal Government of Nigeria to immediately deploy security forces to protect innocent civilians in Edo State and hold perpetrators accountable.

"We also use this medium to call on the Edo State Government to mobilize all available resources to secure Edo communities and farms.

"Local Government authorities are not left out, as they are expected to coordinate their traditional institutions to maintain vigilance and watchfulness of their communities.

"Security agencies are expected to act impartially and decisively against all perpetrators of violence.

"EPIA expects Northern leaders to denounce threats of violence and control militant elements within their communities to ease escalation of violence.

"We call on the international community to take note of the  deteriorating situation and the threat of violence escalation.

"The right to life and security is fundamental. Edo people will defend these rights by any means necessary if the government fails in its constitutional duty to protect all citizens equally.

"EPIA remains open to dialogue with all parties genuinely committed to peace, but we will not sacrifice the safety of our people on the altar of false unity".
