Lagos: As part of event marking the World Diabetes Day (WDD), members of Lagos Achievers Lions Club, District 404 A3, Nigeria organized a blood screening and testing activity on Saturday 16th of November for Obalende South and Ijeh-Dolphin residents.

The event which commenced very early in the day, started with an enlightenment on causes, symptoms and practical ways of  preventing diabetes, known as the  'silent killer'. The enlightenment was anchored by personnel from Kedi Healthcare who doubles as a member of the Lions Club International and Blue Circle member of the International Diabetes Federation, Lion Osarenkhoe E. Chima-Nwogwugwu.

The screening for diabetes and testing for blood glucose level followed there after and was handled by trained members of Lagos Achievers Lions Club, nurses and doctors as well as volunteers from the community.

Other tests carried out at the event  included blood pressure checks and body mass index (BMI), while general wellness evaluation, health education and advise were freely offered by the doctors in attendance.

The Club's President, Lion Imeobong Oluwateniola Oluyemi emphasized the need for adoption of balance diet, reduction in the intake of fat, increase in the intake of plant based food, regular exercises and high consumption of water to reduce the risk of diabetes. She also stated that the health screening was just one way the association helps with identification and addressing of potential and existing health issues. She intimated participants that Lagos Achievers plans to return to the community soon, to offer a more comprehensive medical attention for the indigent population.

Members of the community were also charged to carry out regular check of their blood sugar level due to the high consumption of carbohydrates and processed foods for prevention and better management of diabetes.

A beneficiary of the exercise, Mr Taiwo Wiltshire, while on his daily walk, was the first person to receive attention. Upon discovering that his blood pressure was very high, he was asked to stay for observation and after 45 minutes and attention from the doctors, he was in better shape to go home. He expressed appreciation to Lagos Achievers Lions Club for the timely intervention to his well being.
