As part of effort in curbing domestic violence in Edo State, Echoes of Women in Africa Initiative (ECOWA) has collaborated with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Benin City. This was the thrust of the advocacy visit paid to IOM by ECOWA recently in Benin.

Speaking, the Founder  of ECOWA- Dr Louisa Eikhomun-Agbonkhese said the visit was meant to  share ECOWA's work on domestic violence  and abuse with IOM and also learn from IOM's work for possible collaboration. She said ECOWA has done several projects in ameliorating the plight of women that are victims of domestic violence.

"ECOWA has maintained the following programme areas over the course of several years: Social Justice Education, Research and Policy Advocacy, Practical Support Programme, and Shelter Support.

Dr Louisa Eikhomun-Agbonkhese introduced the Seven Sisters Shelter for Women in Amagba to IOM team. She said the Seven Sisters Shelter for Women was meant to provide shelter for women that are victims of domestic violence. She said the Shelter was meant to save lives of women in abusive relationships and environment.

"The first challenge of women fleeing abuse or a woman ejected forcefully from her matrimonial home is shelter. After rescuing the women, we ensure they get daily bread. We also give petty cash to those that are willing to start a business", she added.

Speaking, a Senior Target Assistant- Barr. Aigbeze Uhimwen welcomed ECOWA's team and said IOM was ready to partner with ECOWA halting the spate of domestic violence in Edo State.

"The Seven Sisters Shelter is a laudable project, we will like to collaborate in that direction. The Shelter will be a safe haven for persons that are being reintegrated back into the society, and for victims of domestic violence.

"We are partnering with the Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues for the 16 days activism. We are also trying to support the State government with a GBV center", Said Barr. Aigbeze.

He presented the ECOWA's team to Ayo Ediale, IOM Gender Coordinator, for inclusion in their programmes beginning from Sixteen Days of Activism 2024.

Included in the IOM 's team are Ayo Amen Ediae- Counter Trafficking Project Assistant, Gender Focal Point, Benin sub office, Osasumwen Adun- Senior Project Assistant.
