Edo SDP suspends Chairman, other

The State Working Committee (SWC) of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Edo  State chapter, has announced the suspension of the State Chairman- Elder Felix Obayagbon. This was contained in a Statement made available by the Party's SWC in Benin City.

"Following the findings and recommendations of the Disciplinary Committee established by the Edo State Working Committee (SWC) to investigate allegations of serious constitutional infractions by Elder Felix Obayagbon, it has become necessary for the SWC to suspend him from the position of Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Edo State Chapter", the Statement said.

Also suspended is Mr. Ekeria Hycenth Esangbedo for impersonation and unlawful usurpation of the office of the State Secretary of the Party.

According to the Statement, "this decision is in full compliance with Article 19, Subsections 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7 of the SDP Constitution. In accordance with the provisions of the aforementioned article, both individuals have been duly served with letters of suspension, and copies are being forwarded to the National Headquarters for your attention and ratification.

The SWC gave the following summary of infractions committed by Elder Felix Obayagbon:

"In blatant violation of Article 19(2) of the SDP Constitution, Elder Obayagbon has persistently sabotaged the efforts of fellow Party Executive members, denying them the ability to function in their duly elected positions. He forcefully removed them from the Party’s operations and rebuffed all reconciliation attempts to date.

"Secondly, Elder Obayagbon habitually receives political aspirants privately at his residence, sidelining the SWC. He extorts funds from these aspirants under the guise of processing their interests, only to later frustrate them. Verifiable evidence of these activities can be provided upon request.

"Thirdly, the Party’s financial structure under his leadership has been opaque. He has made himself the sole custodian of Party funds without any accountability to the SWC.

"Furthermore, during elections, he appoints his wife as the liaison officer between the Party and INEC, bypassing the SWC entirely. He has been involved in the unauthorized distribution and sale of SDP tags to other political parties for personal gain.

"In addition, many legitimate members brought into the Party by other leaders have been deliberately denied membership cards under his administration, limiting their participation and ensuring he retains centralized, personal control over Party affairs. Ironically, he has contributed the least in terms of membership growth."

The SWC gave additional grounds of Elder Obayagbon's incompetence as follows:

"Elder Obayagbon has demonstrated gross political ineptitude. He lacks knowledge of Edo State’s political landscape and has no connections or recognition among key political stakeholders.

"His ignorance of the SDP Constitution and the organizational structure of the SWC and State Executive Committee is alarming.

"He is isolated from fellow SWC members and exhibits an uncooperative, authoritarian approach to leadership. His presence is widely seen as the primary obstacle to the Party’s progress in Edo State.

"His conduct has eroded confidence, trust, and respect among Party members. His attitude is combative, regressive, and widely considered a liability to the Party's vision.

"As a result of the above, it has become imperative for the SWC to act in the best interest of the Party by suspending Elder Felix Obayagbon.

Talking about the suspension of Mr. Ekeria Hycenth Esangbedo, the Statement posited that he was suspended for the unlawful usurpation of the office of the State Secretary in gross violation of the Party’s Constitution. The Statement has it that Mr. Esangbedo has been operating in this capacity without any legitimate appointment or election, emboldened by the now-suspended State Chairman.

"In conclusion, the Edo State Working Committee urges the National Secretariat to ratify these suspensions without delay to safeguard the integrity and future of the Party in Edo State."

How can transactional politicians who always surface on every election year and people who only decamp into the party in April 2025 suspend the chairman. This is comedy ooo
