SEDI partners Edo Waste Management Board over organic waste compost awarenes
This was revealed by the Managing Director of Edo Waste Management Board- Hon. Lucky Enehita Inegbenehi during an advocacy visit paid to him by SEDI in Benin City.
According to Hon. Inegbenehi, "solid waste continues to be a challenge, and finding best practices and appropriate solutions for its management is of great interest.
"We will involve SEDI in our various activities because the Board cannot do it alone. Market women leaders, waste managers, Heads of Environmental departments in all the local government area will be involved".
Speaking earlier, the Executive Director of SEDI- Dr. Tom Aneni said organic waste was a major problem. He said 60 to 70 percent waste are organic in nature.
According to Dr. Tom Aneni, "when organic waste is composted, it can replace chemical fertilizers that are bought in the market". He thereby called for the Board's support in carrying out a small pilot training program around Otofure composite.
"Municipal organic waste also called bio biowaste, constitute the main fraction of municipal solid waste in Nigeria. Often, more than 50% of all municipal solid waste that contains a high percentage of biowaste leads to the generation of methane (a potent greenhouse gas), as well as landfill leachate, that pollute groundwater, surface water and puts human health and environment at risk.
"Organic compost is a fertiliser made from decomposed organic matter, like food scraps and leaves. It's rich in nutrients and can be used to improve soil quality. It's a natural process that can be done at home.
"SEDI wishes to request the technical support and approval of the board to site a pilot organic waste compost facility at the Otofure dumpsite, in partnership with the Waste Pickers at the site", said Dr. Aneni.
