Breaking: Asue Ighodalo pledge to implement 50/50 affirmative action when elected governor
NEW YORK: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the forthcoming Edo State governorship election- Barr. Asue Ighodaro has promised to imbibe the philosophy of gender inclusiveness by implementing 50/50 affirmative action when elected as governor of Edo State. He said he "could be partial when it comes to women issues and promised to go beyond 40% of the gender policy to 50%".
He made this declaration while responding to questions from Mrs. Louisa Eikhomun-Agbonkhese, the founder of Echoes of Women in Africa Initiative (ECOWA) recently at a Diaspora Campaign Tour in Mariot JFK Hotel, New York.
Mr. Ighodalo who was accompanied by his wife- Mrs Ifeyinwa Ighodalo and his Deputy - Osarodion Ogie, Esq., said his "inclusive agenda for Edo people include security, well-being, inclusiveness, green economy, socio-economic empowerment and justice, etc".
Speaking earlier during the questions and answers session, Dr. Mrs. Louisa Eikhomun-Agbonkhese commended the candidate for what she described as all encompassing and inclusive manifesto and commended Mr Ighodaro for his concerns in reducing poverty in Edo state when elected as governor. She further informed the Candidate and his Deputy that Echoes of Women in Africa had submitted a bill on Women Economic Justice in 2022 that's waiting assent.
According to her, "the bill is an anecdote to poverty reduction especially as it concern women".
Furthermore, she drew Mr. Ighodalo's attention to Edo State Gender Policy that stipulates 40% affirmative action for women in decision making positions, and asked how he planned to achieve it when elected governor of the State.
She nevertheless appealed to the candidates to remember the women when they win at the polls in the month of September and "not to continue the rhetorics of 'where are the women to appoint'".
