The role of research ethics in societal transformation emphasised

By Isaac Eranga Lagos: Prof. Temidayo Ogundiran of the West Africa Bioethics Training Center, University of Ibadan, said research ethics play important role in the transformation of a society, saying it is germane and fundamental to human living. Prof. Ogundiran said this during a retreat program organised for students of Center for Bioethics and Research recently in Lagos. He said conducting research with human beings poses some risk, hence the need for research ethics. "Research is very important, but it is faced with some risks; research ethics today seeks to do research by minimizing the harms and maximizing the benefits", he said. The Bioethics Don said research ethicists are umpires that look at ways research can positively affect society and at also look at ways through which harms can be ameliorated. Edo Govt kick-starts basic education reform, counts schools, retrains teachers

The Edo State Government has commenced the reform of the basic education sector with the ongoing schools census exercise which will provide credible and reliable data for planning while the inspectorate department is being revamped. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Basic Education and Sole Administrator, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Joan Oviawe, disclosed this in a chat with journalists at the Government House, Benin City. She said Governor Godwin Obaseki is keen on teacher professional development and data-driven decision-making, which was what inspired the school census being carried out in the state, noting, “We don’t just do things randomly. We have started taking a census of schools. We want to know the number of schools, pupils, and teachers in the state. We’ve built structures to rehabilitate human trafficking victims —Obaseki

GOVERNOR Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has said the state has built formidable structures for the rehabilitation and reintegration of victims of human trafficking and illegal migration who are indigenes of the state. Obaseki disclosed this at the International Conference on Women Empowerment and the Fight Against Trafficking in Persons: Partnership Between Nigeria and Italy, organised by the President of Italian Chamber of Deputies, Ms Laura Boldrini, in Rome, Italy. Unuamen is symbolic and relevant in the history of Benin Kingdom, as it's related to the life and times of Oba Esigie and Queen Idia.
