Amazon-Friend or Foe?

Chris Gardner A lot of writers hate Amazon–they’re big, corporate, money hungry and not at all like those small independent publishers who actually care about what they’re publishing, right? I can’t say I’ve loved every minute or that I’m thrilled with every aspect of the business but for a self-published author who doesn’t have money to burn Amazon is a godsend. It’s true they’ll sell anything–well, almost, and some of the self-published stuff is rubbish, I agree, but the same applies to small publishers who require hundreds of dollars from authors to produce their book. There are publishers who care about their books, of course; if they’re the ones paying the upfront costs it’s essential they publish only what they believe they can sell. Nigerian Senate Confirms Walter Onnoghen As CJN

The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Justice Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria. The confirmation came after a screening exercise conducted for the nominee by the Committee of the Whole. President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, has congratulated the new CJN on his appointment.

Lassa fever kills three in Bauchi

THREE people have been confirmed dead as a result of the outbreak of the deadly Lassa fever in Bauchi State. Commissioner of Health, Dr Halima Mukaddas, disclosed this yesterday while speaking to newsmen in Bauchi. He added that five cases were recorded, two cases from Bauchi and Ganjuwa Local Governments each, while only one was recorded in Alkaleri Local Government Area. She added that out of the five cases, three people died, while two survived after the necessary treatment. Dr Halima called on the people to ensure the cleanness of their environment, as well as desist from making contact with rats. The commissioner warned people to desist from touching such patients with mere hands, instead to always use hand glove.
